OK, this is a neat one. This might be a bit long winded, but I feel the details might help. Last year I was given a 2005 Ford Five Hundred from one of my kids (they weren’t using it and looking to get rid of it), and I figured because it got waaay better gas mileage then my F250, I took it.
When cleaning out the car right after getting it, I noticed that the rear passenger door sounded like it had water in it (sloshed around when swinging the door). I kept on saying “I’ll get to it this weekend”. It really wasn’t impacting anything, and everything else was OK. Well, life happened, and it got put on the back burner. Fast forward to now, and I think that decision is biting me in the ***….
Just recently, as I was cruising down the highway, the car started chiming saying “passenger door ajar”. This happened quickly and reset itself almost as quickly as it happened. Again, no impact to driving or operations. After a while, however, I could pretty much count on that alarm happening almost every time I drove the car.
So, I finally got around to draining the water out of the door and started troubleshooting. This is where I need help. I’m assuming that my door ajar alarms are associated with this door due to the water logging (side note, the water was only about an inch deep in the door, so it wasn’t like an aquarium in there), and that the excess moisture in the door has impacted the door latch contacts. There is a plug that I’m thinking houses the wires to that switch and the power door lock motor (see photos), but without schematics, I can’t be certain. If anyone has the schematics for this year/model, or at least a snippet that shows me what these wires go to, or at the very least, what this plug houses, I’d appreciate the info! Looks like there is a red wire, a black wire, and then pink/black & pink/white.
My thought process is that if one of these sets of wires in this plug is the door open/close contacts, I was going to jumper them out and see if the problem resolves. If so, I’ll invest the time to rip the door all the way apart in order to replace the latch mechanism. If the problem persists, I know it’s not that door and will have to systematically go through each door until it is found.
Thanks for reading, I know I can always count on the Ford community!
