Default AC

I got a good one lol. My 2011 f250 6.7 AC is leaking freon out when turn truck off but when running it doesn't leak. Monday night I put two cans in and 10hrs later when started it in the AM it was gone so put 2 more in and truck was on for 19hrs ac stayed cold entire time right around 40-42deg. Turned truck off that night and next morning(wed) started it still blowing cold got to work shut it off then started it 2 more times at break and lunch and AC same blowing cold and then 3hrs after lunch when was off work started it and blowing hot and unless I leave running it freon escapes. Everything has been replaced this past year except for the evaporator. Oh and last week I added 2 cans and was out next morning so 2 more then went 3 days without having to add any freon🤷🏽‍♂️. Any thoughts on what could be my issue or what to do would be appreciated.

Hi Chuckie,
This is what I suspect is happening.
When the engine is running and AC is requested, the compressor pulls the low side of the system down to approx 35 psi. The high side can go as high as 300 psi.
When the system is turned off the pressures in the system equalize and stay around 80 psi , but can vary due to ambient temp.

I suspect there is a leak in the low pressure side of the system because when working the pressure is reduced .
Guess what one of the components in the low side system could be, the evaporator, you guessed it .
The better way to go after this is with a leak detector. That way the guesswork is eliminated.

Evaporator replacement can be a pretty lengthy job both time and work. Those cans of refrigerant will soon approach the cost to replace the evaporator ,only if necessary.. Could be something as simple as an "O" ring . Leak detector will verify that.

Wow, that's a lot of freon you've been adding! I'm not an expert, but I think hanky's advice about using a leak detector seems spot on. Have you considered taking it to a shop for a proper diagnosis?

I'ts got dye in it and nothing under the hood or at firewall is glowing and I'm guessing reality needs to hit and that it's probably my evaporator which I have a lariat so seats and console have to come out. What sucks most is that it's my only daily driver and the thought of having to try to tackle that job in a weekend time frame startles me lol. Any rough estimate on length of job it is to remove everything from can and what needs to be under hood?
