Rear seals, '00 F-150, just to be sure

Default Rear seals, '00 F-150, just to be sure

New to the Forum as registered member but have used your info numerous times in the past without registration (shame on me). Absolutely the most informative site I've found.

I am about to change out the seals on my '00 F-150. It has the Non-limited slip, 3:55 rear axle. From the descriptions I've read I understand that the dif has to be opened to release the axle but do I read correctly that there are no bolts at the outer axle end that have to be removed? The axle will just pull out after the inner fasteners are removed?

Only one is leaking but on the previous threads I've read seems everyone suggests doing both.

You are correct. jack vekicle up and place on jack stands, remove rear end cover. Let fluid drain. Place truck in neutral and spin the driveshaft until you see a 5/16 head bolt in the carrier. Be really careful in removing this little bolt.(they are easily broken) Then pull the gih pin out of the center. Push in on the axle. There is a "C" clip on the axle that holds it in place. remove that and pull the axle out. Use the axle as a seal puller too. Reverse procedure to install.

Now I'm concerned, if you were confused over what you wrote what does that say about me? Just kidding, I'm fairly certain I've got the procedure down but the comment about using the axle to pull the seal puzzled me.

Just place the end of the axle inside the seal and push it back against the axle tube. Use it as a big lever.

Finished job with no problems. I wimped out using the axle for lever to get the old seal out, I improvised using a pry bar and a box end wrench which did the trick. Only issue was when refilling with fluid it took 8 pints instead of the 5.5 pints called for in the owner's manual. The sticker read - axle 19, which is the non-LS 8.8 but I got the 8 pints into it and it still wasn't flowing out of the fill hole.
