Default Temperature sensor help

Can someone tell me where the temp sensor goes in a 1997 f150. It has the 4.6 in it . I'm not sure if it goes behind the alternator or the one that is about 3 inches from it . I bought one and put it in the one that is about 3 inches from the one that is behind the alternator . But now I'm thinking it was the wrong one . If someone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

Not knowing what kind of problem we are working with, can you fill us in some?
There must be some reason why you are after the coolant sensor, or the cylinder head temp sensor, 2 separate sensors with different functions and same purpose. Yes/no ?
Was there a code to direct you there? If so what was the code or problem ?
What we are attempting to do is maybe save you some $$ and extra not needed work.
Not a good feeling after replacing a good part and still having the same problem.
OK with you ?
