Default Headlights go off while driving

Hey guys. I have a 2011 Ford Edge sel. Driving home tonight and headlights went off while I was driving. I had lights set to auto. I had to turn headlights off and back on again to get them to work. This went on again several times on the way home. I would turn off then on and they would work for a few miles. Had to turn lights off then on about 10 times to get me home safely any ideas as to what it could be? Should I replace bulbs? Or could it be a bad light switch? Also is there better bulbs I could replace with that would give better lighting then the originals?
any help would be much appreciated

Some earlier Fords had problems with the lighting control module and there was a recall on those models. I don't know if that applies in your case but it's worth a look at the LCM.

No recalls but is worthy of troubleshooting.

How do I trouble shoot? How do I tell off it’s headlight switch or bulbs?

You need to obtain an electrical diagram of your vehicle to troubleshoot this.. Unfortunately, I don't have that information. It's not going to be the lamps. Once they burn out, they are done. A bad ground can affect both headlights. Turning the headlights on and off to restore them isn't what a bad ground would behave like. The probability of all your lamps being bad is nill. The headlight switch can be intermittent. A bad switch will have energy at its input and not pass energy thru itself towards your lamps. The LCM is expensive and I wouldn't guess with this. My advice is to have a qualified person diagnose this because it requires some specific wiring information or your only other option is substitution which can be expensive.
