Default Rental cars in Moscow, is it worth driving in the city?

Hey everyone, I’m flying to Moscow next month for work and need a rental car for about a week. I’ve never driven there before, so I’m wondering if it’s better to rent directly at the airport or book online in advance. Also curious about traffic, parking, and whether foreign drivers usually run into problems with local rental companies.

I travel for business several times a year and usually rent through larger international services because the process feels smoother. One thing I learned quickly is to inspect the car carefully before driving away and take photos of every scratch. Moscow roads are generally good, but traffic can become exhausting if you’re not used to aggressive lane changes. Paid parking is common in central districts, and some garages only accept local payment apps, so keep cash and a bank card ready just in case. For short trips around, renting can still be worth it, but honestly the metro is often faster than driving across the city. If you do rent, try getting a compact car because parking spaces are tight in many areas. I also suggest checking whether your hotel offers parking, since overnight fees in the center can be surprisingly expensive.
