Trouble with 78 400

It's a LTD with new distributor, plugs, wires, carb, ICM, fuel pump and gas tank. It runs until it gets hot then it sputters and stalls. Any help would be great. The smog pump is bypassed.

Hayapower 01-24-2019 07:27 PM

Pick up coil was a possibility along with ICM

Mightyox 01-24-2019 07:32 PM

Pick up in the distributor? New coil.

Hayapower 01-24-2019 07:38 PM

Generally,, during heating or extended driving the ICM would fail, causing a no start/stall condition. After some cooling, a restart would be possible and likely.
Although more rare or less cause, a pick up coil could would drop out, or loose signal with similar affects..

Mightyox 01-24-2019 07:47 PM

I believe that came new with the distributor unless we are talking about something different.

Mightyox 01-24-2019 07:51 PM

Could it be the EGR?

Hayapower 01-24-2019 08:35 PM

Distributor wasn’t mentioned prior,, EGR application shouldn’t be at idle, although easy enough to prove out..

Mightyox 01-24-2019 08:39 PM

How can I test the EGR?

Hayapower 01-24-2019 09:18 PM

Unless the EGR is open/bleeding removing the vacuum hose will eliminate EGR application.. The temp doesn’t seem to follow EGR,, So,, hot meaning what?

Mightyox 01-25-2019 05:28 AM

Hot meaning running temp. Could it be the carb is to rich when it gets warm and is flooding it out.

Mightyox 01-25-2019 06:12 PM

I'm going to work with the car on sunday and I'll report back for the hell of it.

Hayapower 01-25-2019 08:21 PM

Does it ever hard start after sitting, mearning run excessive rich, after a hot or cold soak?

Mightyox 01-25-2019 08:31 PM

I'll get back to you Sunday. It's been a few weeks since I've tried it and cant remember if it was or not. You've been a great help so far. I'll take a few pics of the car while I'm at it.

Mightyox 01-27-2019 02:15 PM

It wouldn't run today. I was getting gas to the fuel pump but not to the carb. I pulled the filter and rust poured out. New tank, old lines. I drained the gas out cause it was full of trash. I'm getting a new filter and some carb cleaner I'll get back to it next weekend. I hope this has been my problem all along.

Mightyox 02-03-2019 07:06 PM

I put a new fuel filter on it Wednesday, charged the battery put in some seafoam. Today I put the battery in and drove it around the yard. It had a vacuum leak and plugged that and tuned the carb. She's running good now. I need tags and I'll hit the highway and report back hopefully next week.

Do you sale any?

Hayapower 02-04-2019 12:33 AM

Looking for anything in particular?
Lots of folks have old tapes laying around, usually more than willing to give them away, or eBay and even some second hand/thrift stores at times will have them..

Mightyox 02-04-2019 05:09 AM

Classic country and rock. I plan on buying some. I'm gonna hit a flea market or two.

Turns out the guy I bought the car from was wrong. It's a 351m.

Finally here is a picture of the car. Its at my stepdads house. Ill have the title and plate next week.

Hayapower 02-24-2019 05:56 PM

Looks nice :)

Mightyox 03-19-2019 07:42 PM

Man this car has been a real pain. The timing was so far off it was ridiculous. Ive been driving it since Sunday. If everything works out I'll be driving it to the beach this weekend. The heater core is bad I'm going to bypass it until I get back. The voltage regulator went out today and the car left me stranded

Mightyox 03-29-2019 10:52 AM

Again its broke down. I fixed a lot of the wires that were badly damaged and replaced the starter solenoid.

Hayapower 04-05-2019 09:14 AM

Im gonna put bed liner on it and see how that looks. I just might bag it and make it a lowrider in the future.

Thats why I asked,, I used Herculiner.
My 72 Dart had a lot of surface rust, not through rust but around the windshield leading edge where the top failed .
Took care of the rust, rollers applied the liner. When it set up, I blocked it down a bit to mimic the vinyl that was there. I then shot some low sheen black auto paint on top the liner.. Came out very nice. Other than missing the material seams, hard to tell..

Mightyox 04-05-2019 11:15 AM

Nice. I had a 71 duster with a slant in it.

Hayapower 04-05-2019 11:35 AM

Other then a paint refresh 15 years ago,, top about 3 ago, a few wear parts here n there,, all OE and untouched..

On the liner application,, after some blocking to cut the rough surface, painted, and re sand a couple times to smoooth the ‘look’.. Tough stuff, tenacious hold, easy to work with...

Thanks for the tips. I hope mine turns out good.

Whats causing it to almost stall when it shifts? It does it the most when going slow and on second gear.

Hayapower 04-08-2019 11:36 AM

Some of the contributors might be,,
Vacuum leaks,
Vacuum advance issues, ported vacuum switches/lines etc, timing
EGR flow, excessive, or not under management control, off idle.
Carb accelerator pump weak or missing a healthy spray, carb Power valve can bleed (generally a hard/rich start after some hot soak time) or have stiff diagram issues.

If on a brake hold, and the throttle tipped in slightly, can you create or duplicate the stubbed you noted?

No i cannot.

Mightyox 04-09-2019 06:20 AM

Its literally right after the shift to second only. It doesnt do it every time

Mightyox 04-09-2019 05:22 PM

I manually shifted the car today it doesn't happen on the or near the shift. Its about 3 or 4 seconds into me pushing the pedal from a stop. It might be the old fuel lines. I have a lot of rust in my inline filter. I just put it on, and the gas tank is new. I might drop the tank. The gas gauge isnt working anyway.
