Default Ignition key switch

My 91 ranger, the ignition key switch is turning past where it usually stops.
I installed a new ignition key switch but it still turns past its normal point.
Truck still starts but its not in its normal position.
The off position is normal but the start position is further. seems like something in the switch housing has moved. Help please.

There is a rack with teeth that engages with a gear that when you rotate the ign key tumbler moves the rack. That rack has a rod attached to it. That rod is indexed with the ign switch assy that is mounted on the lower steering column. It sounds like the gear has changed it's position in relation to the rack. What many placed did instead of disassembling the steering column to replace the worn parts swapped columns with one from a salvage yard.

I was afraid you were going to say that. If I don't do anything will it stop working? Thanks

I have never heard of them getting better. If it is due to wear, it could get to the point where it won't move the rack at all.
