battery goes dead with key in ignition switch

battery goes dead with key in ignition switch
1999 ranger
Bought a used ranger. 3 times the battery went dead within a week or so.
(key left in after turning off engine)
Replaced battery but the new battery also went dead
in a few days.
Then startedREMOVING the key from the ignition.
Battery NEVER went dead again! (this has been my fix so far)
Do I have a bad switch? Has anyone else seen this problem?
(Dealer's answer, OH you have to use your truck every few days! HA)
