Default pump or torque

hello guys nice to meet you all i am at a place that allot of us don't want to be and when you get there you don't know what to do or who to trust, i have the 93 bronco with the Eddie b setup 351 with 5.8 and the 4x4 auto trans OK , dude comes to the house and was supposed to replace a seal and freeze plugs truck drives fine no issues other the what i am asking him to fix he drives the car to his shop and call s me a week later telling-me my trans pump is bad ok he was supposed to pull trans to replace rear seal he never did he couldn't get the dam thing apart ok so as far as him breaking some thing he couldn't have ok so how can you tell if you need a pump or torque converter this is the million dollar question i cant seem to get even seasoned repair men to answer the guy who had the truck last said it was driving and it just started acting like it was stuck in neutral and wouldn't shift into any gear you move the shifter and it does nothing now the wierd thing is when i talk to these so called specialist they tel me sir we would have to diagnose it but a rebuild is gonna cost you 1500 or more ok ,, but once we tear it down and we find out its just the pump thats gonna cost you just 1500 or so or if its the the torque converter same deal so what the hell does that sound like ripp off or am i just not looking at it right , thats why i came here you guys are not invested in any way and your advie is what i am seeking someone who isn't trying to bleed me for the simplest job i know its not a simple job but why make me pay for a thing i dont need when you can just repair the issue at hand is all i am asking thank you gentleman in advance and have a great day

First of all, anything is possible. If you are not comfortable with the place that presently has your vehicle you might continue asking around and hopefully someone close by may be able to give you an accurate answer. Then you might have the vehicle towed there.
If you feel there is something going on there, best to get the vehicle out of there. There are pressure tests that can help narrow down the problem. Good shops with good technicians are hard to find these days and maybe someone can recommend a good shop to you.
Just a thought,,,,,,,,,could the transfer case be in between gears ? Some have a neutral position.
