That should not be a problem as long as the '87 model has the integrated RABS speed sensor in the pumpkin housing. At that point however, you will have practically rebuild rear end anyway, having to readjust the backlash and all of the torque specs and everything. it would probably be easier in the long run to simply buy new parts for the "87 housing, maybe reuse the carrier and axle shafts.
