Do you think you can handle pinpoint C with a helper? You just need someone to shift inside the car while you are looking at the the lever shift control cable movement. If you decide to DIY I will provide further diagrams and instructions. Tools that you need, a jaw locking plier (the big one on the right), 15mm socket with ratchet and 15mm and 9mm wrench (not sure about the size), and a flat head. If you have 1/4 and 3/8 torque wrench that'd be helpful as well.

I do all my own mechanic work except for big jobs like engine or tranny swaps. I have all the tools you mentioned. I'd DIY to see what I can determine if I had diagrams, pictures, manual, etc. to show me what I am looking for.

Routine 201 + 301 Below. Let me know if you need to see another routine.

If you need to remove the DTR, you DON'T need to use the TRS alignment tool.
As you can see about the Pinpoint C and the 201-301 routines, all about the shift cable and the DTR. If those are fine, then you could have internal tranny problems.

From your description , it sounds like the forward clutch is gone.. If there was a pressure problem that contributed to this, there is a modified pump to overcome that problem.

A remanufactured trans, would have the latest updates in it. Most suppliers of remanufactured trans will not warranty their trans unless the cooler is replaced.

Might want to touch base on that before starting the job.

Thank You to all of you for your input/advice!

I have another wrench to throw in this mess!

My son was scared to tell me the whole story, but came clean today!

The day his tranny went out, he did some mods to include a ECM tune. Here is the story:

Basically, he installed a BBK 78MM throttle body and at the same time installed a Mary Tune. I kinda know what a tune is, but not an expert. My son said this tune also changed his shift points in the tranny. As soon as he did all of this, he took his car on a test drive and...You guessed it! He said he drove about one mile and felt it shift different. He turned down a side street and came to a stop. He tried to do a U-Turn and there was no more forward gears. He then put it in reverse and backed down the street back to the main road. At this point, he called me to get his car towed home.

This info. would have been nice to know a week ago!!!

Does anyone have any knowledge about tunes?
Is it possible (It sure is strangely coincidental) that this tune is the result of his issues?
Is it possible to retune the ECM back to where it was prior?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Most times if any "Add on is disconnected/removed", the system will usually revert back to original.

Were there any instructions for doing that , which may have come with the kit ?

Hi Heiko!

I have a 1993 Ford Crown Vic, with the 4.6 L V8, rear wheel drive, automatic. The car has about 106,000 miles.

I was reading this thread, and read through the testing inspsction manual you posted. I think I have a "point B" issue, specifically with the selector not corresponidng to the gear I want it and and the control cable from the shifter to the transmission. I know that guide is for a 2002 Ford, but could I use the same procedure for a 1993?

It started with putting the car in reverse. I would shift into reverse and it would not engage so I keep my foot on the brake and put it into park or neutral, back to reverese and it engages. Now this is beginning to occur in drive.
After a cold start it engages in drive, sometimes after a 5-10 minute drive when I go to put it in park, it will not engage so I keep my foot on the brake, shift to neutral adn back to park and it engages.

When the problem began with engaging reverse, I checked the transmission fluid, and it is black like oil. I was advised to have a transmission flush, put new fluid, drive it for a week and drain and empty the tranmsion again with Ford trasmission fluid. I think threre issue is the combination of burnt transmission fluid and the selector cable.
Also I was taught that if transmission fluid has never been flushed, you don't do it.

I have had vehicles with a slipping transmission with trouble shifting out of first or second gear adn this is not like that. Any suggestions are appreciated!

For selector not corresponding to the gear you just need to find a helper to shift and so you can look at the cable movement at the range sensor, this way you can tell if the cable is not aligning or there is a problem at the steering column or floor shifter (don't know which one you have).
Anyhow download and look at the AT-Testing_Inspection.pdf below specifically for 1993 Crown Victoria.

Exclamation Is it a mistake to change transmission fluid that might not have been changed?

When I bought my 1993 Crown Vic, I checked verything except the transmission fluid. I checked it it the fall and it is black like old engine oil. I didi the smell test and it does not have a burnt or weid odor.

I called a shop to have a transmission flush plus new filter. The shop told me due to the age of the car (1993 model) and the transmision fluid being bakck they would not advise chnaging it. (I have heard doing so can cause the tranmission to slip or lock up.)
Other peope have said I should change it since it has low miles for its age (106,000 area) and speculated the previos owner might have put engine oil in place of transmission fluid.
I have a road trip coming up for work that is 1300 miles one way. The engine and transmisson will be under greter stree for a linger duration of time.
Around town I drive my car maybe 10 miles round trip per day mostly at 25 mph. I have driven it on the freeway before at 70 -80 miles per hour but that is maybe once every two or three motths.
The previous oner never said about oil and transmission flushes.
As fa as I know everything is original on the car.
I am concered either way I risk dmaging the transmisson. If I don;t change it, I drive with old black transmission fluid. If I do change it the tranmsiion be fine, might slip or seize.
As of now I have not seen any fluid laks on the ground under the vehicle.
What would you suggest and what would you do?

Thanks!

Even if you did nothing, it can get worse.

A flush will not correct the problem.
Right now that trans MAY be on borrowed time ! I don't know if a fluid and filter change will help until we try. If it helps ,consider yourself lucky.

The most it can cause you is fluid and filter,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but we don't know if that will be opening a can of worms.

Something to keep in mind,,,,,,,,,the cooler, torque converter and lines still will have dirty fluid in them after the first change. A flush might get most of the dirty fluid out ,,, but will definitely open that can of worms.
This is what might end up having to be done. remove trans, either replace it, flush out cooler and lines and do everything all at the same time. If motor oil was added it could affect the clutches and the trans would quit anyway.
