Default 1976 e250 351w hydraulic lifter/rocker adjust

Hello all
I recently replaced the carburetor on my 351w and cleaned underneath the valve covers as well as the rest of the engine. When I started the thing up I noticed that there was a misfire. I open up the valve covers and anybody had told me that I needed to loosen the rockers. It seems like a bad idea but being the he knows a lot more than cars than I do I loosened a couple of them and cover them up and started again. Now it's ticking which I know is not a good thing. I am pretty new to cars and fixing them and would really appreciate if somebody could give me a walkthrough on how to properly adjust the rockers without any special tools. Ive seen some methods on youtube but would like some instruction from a forum like this one. The van is a POS, but its MY pos and while its rusty and old, the engine is good with only 14,500 miles. I would love nothing more than to hear the engine roar like its supposed to. I definitely did a backflip after getting the carb on and getting it started the first time. Thanks guys!

Take good care of your baby !

The engine has to be idling to perform the following adjustment

The recommended procedure for adjusting those hydraulic valve lifters was,,,,,,,,,,,loosen the adjustment until you hear the valve clacking, then turn the adjustment screw down slowly until the clicking stops, then turn the adjusting screw one more full turn down and lock it there. That will place the lifter in the middle of it's travel .

You might consider getting a set of clips that you place on the rocker arms so it keeps the lubricating oil from going all over the place , otherwise you will have oil and smoke all over the place. This is not difficult , you can do it !
