Default 1991 econoline issues

Hi. Just purchased a 1991 Econoline E-150 with a 5.8L engine. This thing is a pig on fuel. I know it's a big engine but wow.

Just changed the plugs to NGK G-powers, was running champions. Changed the wires and did an oil change. The oil was pretty black. It seems to idle high, wondering if the map sensor is an issue. Anyone know the exact location of the spout connecter? I'm hoping not on the distributor?

Any ideas on what to look for? Been a while since I've owned an older vehicle.

Thanks. Rob.

I'll have to go over this van with a fine tooth comb. The PCV hose was ruptured. Now she's got some gumption.

I would ditch the NGK plugs. Motorcraft is what should be used. If you cannot get them, Autolites are the next best. The PCV hose issue would have added to the oil's black appearance, lean fuel mix( with the computer adding more fuel to compensate) and the high idle. That should help your mileage some. I haven driven hundreds of thousands of miles with 88-92 Econolines (with 4.9's) and unfortunately your old van's gas mileage would be lucky to get 15mpg. 11-13 mpg is what I would expect in a 91 E150 with a 5.8..My advice is to keep the tire's properly inflated and follow your owner's manual for recommended maintenance items and intervals.

Checked 4 places today, and NGK was the only brand that I could get 8 plugs. Had to go to 2 different stores to get them. It had champions in it. What a pain in the keister to change the distributor cap, wires and plugs.

I know she's never going to be easy on fuel, I bought it to convert to a camper. I noticed a difference tonight, but she's still burning rich. It idles kind of high too. Going to see if there are any codes stored this weekend. Thanks.

If you think it's running rich, check the fuel pressure regulator. Pull its vacuum line off and cycle the key a few times. If fuel comes out the nipple, replace the regulator.

The only way you will be able to get to the fuel pressure regulator is after you remove the doghouse cover. Always a good idea to lube the 2 bolts at the rear of the doghouse with something like Never Seize. since they are not usually removed that often except for maintenance.

Haven't had a chance to look, just getting over a bout of strep throat. Where is the fuel pressure regulator?

You need to remove the doghouse to get access to it.
It is held on to the fuel rail a the back of the engine.
