1993 Ford econoline E150 - AMP light and Fuel pump noise
Hi There,
First time poster, please be gentle 😊
I have a 1993 Ford Econoline E150 camper and I have the following new issue.
On a good day, I turn the Key, the fuel pump make a noise for 2 seconds, then it starts. Recently, when I turn the Key the Amp light comes on straight away, and the fuel pump makes the same noise, but will not stop. While it is doing this, the engine will not start. The battery is fine, and has plenty of fuel.
Any thoughts? Possibly a bad ignition?
Thanks you in advance
Cheers
Andy

A little FYI,
When we first turn the key on, the ECM provides a ground for the fuel pump relay to close and supply power thru the inertia sw on down to the fuel pump. The ECM only provides the ground for 2-3 seconds and supposedly no more. When the engine is being started, the pick up coil in the distributor provides a signal to the ECM and ign module to keep the fuel pump running. If the signal goes off the fuel pump stops.
What will need to be determined,
1. Is the fuel pump relay sticking on
2. Are we getting the correct fuel pressure
3. Is there a problem with the ECM (Computer)
Some fuel pumps were a little noisy, but still provided the correct amount of fuel to the fuel pressure regulator.
There could be a problem with the charging system and/or poor connection involving the charging /electrical system causing the battery light to come on.
This is out in left field, but a duplicate path for ground through the fuel pump relay coil may be involved here, possibly another circuit using the relay for a ground.
Until the charging system is confirmed working correctly, one could hop around hoping to come across the problem.and never find it.

Hi Hanky,
Sorry for the late reply, and thank you for the help, its much appreciated.
I will start with the Fuel pump relay and Alternator check and go forward from there, I will let you know how I get on 😊
As I assume you are based in the USA, can you recommend any websites or stores that would stock parts that I may need for this vehicle? I am based in the UK.
Also, I didn’t mention, but it’s the 5.0L V-8 model.
Cheers

You may want to check your ECM. There are three electrolytic capacitors on the circuit board that go bad and cause what you describe with your fuel pump. It is located behind the kick panel, remove the negative battery cable, remove the cover from from the ECM. Look for leaky and bulging capacitors.
Hi Raski,
Thank you so much for the help, you was right, it was the Capacitors on the ECM. Soldered in 3 replacements, starts instantly now and has never run so good! =)
A mechanic round here would have never found this issue
Thanks again!

Glad you got it going. I forgot the values of those three caps, can you refresh my memory.
