Forgot to mention. I used one of those inexpensive Harbor Freight hand pumps to pull out about 3.5 quarts out the dipstick tube. No mess unbolting the pan afterward.

Yeah,, how ever you can evacuate some lube,, nothing worse than a pipeline of ATF making its way to your armpit, or an oily shirt for the job 😜

Default trans drain and fill

One more question, if I wanted to replace more of the fluid, could I just do two fluid changes? What would this process be like? Do I have to start the van between pan removals?
This is what I'm imagining for two replacements:
1. Remove drain pan to empty old fluid.
2. Replace drain pan.
3. Add new fluid to replace lost fluid.
4. Remove drain pan to empty old fluid.
5. Replace gasket and filter.
6. Replace drain pan.
7. Add new fluid to replace lost fluid.

Am I on the right track?

Lastly, is it even a good idea to replace more of the fluid?
Easiest way I have found is to pull the line coming from the trans cooler, put it in a bucket and put another hose on the line going to the trans just to catch fluid.
start it up and let it Idle a bit, I like to have someone else at the key to stop it as soon as fluid flow reduces.
now I pull the pan and change the filter and clean the pan up.
replace the pan and add about 5 quarts.
start it back up and let about 4 quarts come out.
stop and add 4 quarts.
repeat until you see clean fluid coming out.
you have now allowed the trans pump to push out all the old fluid through the converter and the cooler.
once you have seen the clean fluid stop and put the line from the cooler back in place and add fluid until it is at the correct level, should be idling and at temp when you make the final check.
