Default 2004 E250 transmission not going into forward gears

My 2004 E250 has 92,500 miles. Was a church utility van so hasn’t been run a lot. It runs great but sometimes doesn’t want to go into forward gears. When shifting into forward gear, it’ll act like it’s in neutral and then jump into gear when I give it a little gas, sometimes it takes a little more than others. It never has a problem going into reverse gear. It also sometimes has a hard shift from 1st to 2nd.

I’m thinking of putting some Lucas transmission fix into it first. I know some folks love it and others say it’s useless. Seems like it does help in some situations though.

If I do put Lucas in, should I remove a little trans fluid first?

any other suggestions?

Thanks!

When was the trans filter last changed?

May not correct the problem, but could have some bearing on other parts.

There are some receipts in the pocket that note transmission flush and filter in December 2016. Don’t know milage at that time, but it had 86k in 2018 and has 92k now. It was clearly used very little and did a lot of sitting, but it drove from Massachusetts to Georgia just fine after a tube up, oil change, and brake job the PO had done.

There are regular tuneup service receipts every year from 2014 - 2019, but no mileage on any of them.

Trans fluid looks new and doesn’t have a burnt smell. Looks like it might be a little high though, at the top of the “H” range on the dip stick after I had it running for 2 minutes to get it level.
