Default 2014 E250 Cargo Van Interior Dome and Rear Cargo Lights

Hello,

I changed out the interior dome light bulbs to LED lights. I made sure the socket connections are the same style so they just plug in no problem. Compared to the old bulbs I can actually see details at night with the LED lights. First thing I noticed after changing them is when I turn off the engine the interior cab and rear cargo dome lights stay on for nine minutes before finally going off. I actually timed the stupid thing. The old incandescent bulbs would shut off after half a minute or so or immediately when the engine starts. The bigger problem is upon starting the engine both LED go on and stay on all the while the engine is running. Not so much a problem in daytime driving but not good driving at night, so for the cab I pulled the light but I'd like them to function as they should: on when open door, off within half a minute after closing door or starting engine.
.
I'm guessing it's something to do with the lower voltage drop of the LED. I've seen problems with household AC voltage LED on a motion sensor controlled light fixture and found out the motion sensor needs to be designed specifically to handle LED lights. Here though with the DC voltage of the vehicle perhaps the capacitor in the circuit to time out the shut-off is having a problem with a LED?

Any Electrical Engineers or knowledgeable people know what's going on?

Thanks

It would seem ,,,,,,,,,,,,if there is a capacitor involved,,,,,,,,,,,a low value bleed resistor might reduce the time.

First, about the nine minute delay... there are switches on some of the interior lights to turn them ON or to work with the courtesy light circuit. Even when the switch is set to ON, they will go out after a time period of key off (Battery Saver). Maybe they are tuned ON and only shutting off after the Battery Saver Delay. I don't know the delay time of the battery saver delay.

Second, the courtesy lamps are powered from an FET (Field Effect Transistor) in the Smart Junction Box (built into the interior fuse box). Perhaps the LEDs do not provide enough load on the FET to allow it to turn off (they do have some leakage current). You could try putting the original bulbs into one light (and then another, etc.) to see how many incandescent bulbs you need to put enough load on the FET to get it to shut off.

Thanks hanky, I had some similar thoughts on a remedy. Further investigation is gonna eat up what little free time I have.

Thanks etinpa, I suspecting the load issue also. and that makes sense with a FET in the mix of circuitry, I;l have to dig further.

Thanks for getting back to us.

If you do solve the problem, there may be others here that would appreciate hearing your solution.

There has to be others learning about changes required when switching to LEDs.

How do you know all brand all LEDs are plug n' play? 80% on the market are NOT.
There could be $1 each also $10 each and $20 each. Where did you buy the LEDs, send direct link to here.
