Can you provide a little more info like , where it is located on the engine, and how many wires if any were connected to it if any?

If it has vacuum hoses on the upper part .it could be a thermal vacuum switch to control other valves that are vacuum controlled, which could be most likely emission controls. Can you tell us where the hoses go?

We should be able to come up with the correct answer once we have some idea of what it controls..

Because of the age we might have a little problem finding one , but we don't know until we try.
May be able to come up with a vacuum diagram. They were usually under the hood in the engine compartment.

Its the heater/water control valve.

It controls heated coolant flow into the heater core. The vacuum lines like to rot and flake away..
