Default 96 e-150 sloppy gear slector? and noise

i have 96 e-150 with 93,xxx miles and out of no where this morning the gear slector doesnt slect as it sld. it hard to put in park and when u put it in drive it wld be showng in N or in R. also when i put it in drive and i press the petal the drive shaft like makes a clunk and it goes.

Could be a few possiblities..

The 'shift tube' can break and cause the loose shift selections./ranges Also, at the bottom of the main column body (near where the trans cable connects to the lower selector arm) you'll see 2 torx screws that attach the lower arm to the shift tube. Those screws like to come loose and can fall out causing a selection 'hunt' condtion. If the screws are intact and tight, the shifter tube is probably broken. Sometimes you'll get a 'pop' sound is the tube is cracked or broken.

Here's a quick image of the tube, and the lower arm where the torx screws are (arrow indicated)
