Default Ford 5.4 2v burning oil

Good morning ford fam, I have a 2012 ford e350 15 passenger van. It is my family daily, (family of 8). My van has little under 160k miles. And is burning oil a little to much. I am constantly having to check and add. Looking to start using a thicker oil, is that a good idea? If so what oil do yall recommend? Also thinking of changing out pcv valve. Appreciate any advice.

You are heading in the right direction. Pull out the pcv valve, if it rattles it's ok. If you want to change it, use a Motorcraft OEM valve. Use no aftermarket valves if possible.Make sure you have good vacuum going to the valve and its grommet is in good shape providing a tight fit of the valve.. Finally, make sure the breather element if equiped, in the air cleaner box and its plumbing are clear. The engine's crankcase must be able to "breathe".

Did you have an opportunity to look under the vehicle for any possible oil leaks? Some times oil leaks only leak when the engine is running and do not always leave a puddle under the vehicle when parked.

A large puddle of oil would be very obvious on the driveway from oil which has accumulated on the under carriage of the van.

A poorly operating ventillation system would allow pressure to be built in the crankcase, forcing oil out through seals and gaskets.

If you suspect the oil is getting past the rings or into the intake and burning in the combustion chamber, you should see signs of that on the spark plugs. Do the plugs appear other than clean and tan colored?
