What is this weird cold start noise on a new to me 98 E150 4.6
Oil pressure right after startup.
Hi all. Recently purchased an E150 with the 4.6 2V engine with 139,000 miles. The day after I brought her home, I noticed this weird rattle noise only on cold starts that lasts maybe 2 seconds. It doesn't happen during the cranking but just after the engine starts. Doesn't happen any other time and only if it's been sitting for more than 4 hours. I wish I would have heard this during the test drive but it was already warmed up. The picture is of the oil pressure right after startup and this is where it stays. Is this high? Any feedback is appreciated. I have a video of the sound on youtube that I will try to figure out how to link.

Have you found anything about this? I just purchased a 1998 F150 with the 4.6 and have the same problem. It was warmed up when we bought it and sounded good. Once we got it home, same thing, a "rattle" for just a few seconds after starting then it runs great. Our neighbor is a ford mechanic so I'm going to get him to have a listen and see what he thinks
remember at some point during that time. Ford was sued for purposely falsifying oil temp gauge readings.
would help if you can source the area of the noise.
timing chain, lifters, loose rod bearings? (tightening up after rotation and heat)

You might want to check the oil filter .
Some cheapies don't contain an "anti-drainback valve". This a rubber type diaphram that prevents the lube system from draining back into the pan after shut down.
If that is present you could be looking at possible timing chain and tensioners.
