Winter tires in front only?

Winter tires in front only?
2009 E-350 16' box van. Because of worn lower ball joints, I need to get new front tires... Because of circumstances I will have to make a few 200 mile round trips over the winter.
On my FWD winter beater car I have winter tires in the front for traction. I only have one pair of winter tires and steelies for that vehicle and although "by the book" they should go in the rear, that is not an option because then I often would not have adequate traction to get moving forward. The point of mentioning this is that I already know to go slower in turns to keep the rear (4-season tires) from swinging out...
I will only be replacing the front tires on the E-350... Because of the upcoming winter trips I am thinking of going with winter tires in front (and the existing 4-seaton duals in the rear). Are there any safety concerns that I am not realizing/understanding with putting winter tires in the front only?
Also, my door sticker says 16x6 wheels. Most wheels I'm seeing are 16x7... For LT225 tires (my stock size), 16x7" should be fine, right?

It is easy to sit where it is nice and warm and tell you all seasons would be fine, l but if you get stuck , I won't need to do the shoveling, so do what you can afford and should do
.I ran 350s with dual rear Bridgestone aggressive tires and nobody ever got stuck making deliveries on unplowed roads.
They were 350s with automatics and 14 ft boxes. V8 gas.. The drivers all had single chains to go through the holes in the rims if necessary.
