Yesterday my check engine light came on when traveling less than 1 mile from my house, an hour later I was returning home (again less than a mile) when I heard what sounded like I dropped my muffler - but it was coming from the engine (metal dragging). Then I heard what sounded like marbles knocking around in my engine, before my car cut out completely and I coasted to the curb. Starting it today the marble sound was still there.

I have had it towed to a mechanic but any suggestions?

 

Did you get a chance to look in the engine compartment and possibly determine the approx area the noise was coming from?
