Question 2008 Escape running but not moving

Hi, yesterday I got in and started it - everything seemed fine. That is, until I tried putting it in gear - it was stuck in park.
I turned off the engine, and started it again to no avail.
So, I got a small flathead and pushed the button in (near the shifter) to enable it to shift out of park - it still would NOT move forward, nor backward.
I also checked the brake lights - they did NOT work.
However, blinkers and every other light worked.
So I did replace the brake light switch - and no change. Unless the old switch went bad, and the new one did not work either.
It has 43,000 miles on it, and I keep it well maintained, and just flushed the transmission a few months ago.
I did not see a similar post. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Did you look under the vehicle to confirm nothing was accidentally disconnected?

Yes. Nothing that I could see.
