Hello all, I am going to be doing a trans fluid change on my wife's Escape and wanted to know if there are any recommendations for alternatives to the Motorcraft GL4 75w-90 fluid, which is about $30 bucks a bottle at local dealer. Not finding much that are GL4 compatible at the local stores or are lacking details as to whether to use in GL4.

Stick with a GL-4 as recommended which is safe for "yellow" (brass) found in the synchros.The sulfur found in GL-5 lubricants which is for differentials, can do the damage to those parts in your MT.. An alternative would be a Redline oil which is still costly but much cheaper than a Ford product. You are only going to change out the gear oil once or twice in the life of the vehicle, do it right and don't skimp.

Yeah I believe you're correct. After doing more research on some other GL4 oils Motorcraft seems the way to go.
