All the wiring diagrams Ive seen so far show four wires, 2 for lock motor and 2 for door ajar, Do's any one know what the 5th red wire is for, the mechanism is a 5L84 78264A01

 

Wiring diagram only have four wires, I would recommend posting a picture of the wiring you have in your door.

 

Thanks for the reply. The outer pair supply the latch motor, 2nd and 3rd from left are door ajar. 2nd from right is a mystery.

Posted an image but its disappeared, The plug has the four wires shown as your Diagram but there's a red on pin 4

Can we inquire what was the reason you got involved in the driver's side door lock area ?
There must have been some problem, or wasn't there?

 

Central locking was acting a bit weird, Drivers door and trunk lock opened and all locks but the drivers side rear would lock. I suspect the lock motor is blown as its open circuit but not knowing the function of this mysterious red wire, coupled with this lock being more expensive makes me unsure. Finally its probably the only Escape/Maverick on the Island so I have to order parts from the States, its a great car, had an xls in the UK and hoping this last me out. :-)

 

Were you able to supply power directly to the door lock /unlock motor assy to verify the mechanism itself did not respond?

If it does, then you would be reasonably sure the problem lies elsewhere, what do you think?
