2 days ago, while looking for something I dropped, I discovered the "Fuel Reset" hiding behind the passenger kick panel. Next time I went to fire up the Escape, it cranked but would not start on numerous attempts. I recalled the Fuel Reset, accessed it through a small door in the panel and pushed the button on top of the unit. It clicked. Back in the driver seat, she cranked right up like the little SUV I love. How it got "unreset" I will never get to know, but if it needs resetting, that's how it's done and it won't run til you do.
