Default Solution- Battery drain- 2020 Hybrid Escape

Entering 3rd week - possible success. Ongoing issue since buying the car as a new vehicle. Car battery would drain, vehicle would not start at random times. Tended a couple times a week to prevent a dead state. Battery replaced 2 x. Changed dealer shops. First one kept returning the car saying ' we checked the codes, no malfunction, didn't drain, we updated the software.' 4, 5, 6 times? Lost count. Current dealer same method, kept it few dates, stated not draining, a month later...drain city, dead while parked at work. Tech changed the battery under warranty and advised removing the vehicle from the Ford App and not using phone it to remote start -may be the reason for the drain.

For those looking at the Optima dh6, it doesn't fit in this vehicle.

Do you have any added on accessories inside the vehicle ? Many times they create problems .

Do you leave the FOB inside the vehicle? If so It always thinks you are going to start it and keeps all the modules awake which after about 45 minutes they normally go into sleep mode.
Sometimes we remove add on's when we leave the vehicle for repair and that may be why they cannot find anything..

No accessories are ever left in the car.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear.

Newer vehicles contain quite a few modules that control various parts of the vehicle.

When the vehicle is shut down , most of these modules go into sleep mode and produce no electrical drain.

Certain modules need to be awakened to allow parts of the vehicle to function. Some of these modules are active if they sense the vehicle operator is going to start the vehicle. The FOB is the signal sending unit and if it is not removed and a certain distance from the vehicle., it keeps certain modules active and when active those modules consume power and over a period of time can cause the vehicle's battery to become drained..

Also some add on convenience items can cause that type problem.

With that knowledge kept in mind just maybe one of those items may be present/applied here..

This should be pretty easy to pin down.
There are only so many things energized when reverse is selected and all we need to do is disconnect the normal things energized and the remaining drain should be easy to find.

well… pretty smart actually
i will inform my car service provider to look into this and i hope he can figure it out.. one service provider told me the battery needs rebalancing (not knowing of the reverse battery draining issue at that time) maybe the two issues are related?!!
many thanks for the suggestion

There are 2 service bulletins for the 2020 Escape Hybrid. Both address faulty ABS programming, which keeps the communications going when the car is off. Dealer needs to reprogram the ABS module and PCM. Look up SSM 49574 and SSM 49990. Good luck!

Hanky,
Thanks for the post regarding the key fob and sleeping/awakening modules. On my 2008 Escape Hybrid I was checking for parasitic drain every conceivable way (the best and easiest method was Ford Makuloco's "Third Option" using a voltage clamp). I followed his directions to the letter and no drainage was indicated, so I continued to research online forums until I found your reply that stated "When the vehicle is shut down, most of these modules go into sleep mode and produce no electrical drain. Certain modules need to be awakened to allow parts of the vehicle to function. Some of these modules are active if they sense the vehicle operator is going to start the vehicle. The FOB is the signal sending unit and if it is not removed and a certain distance from the vehicle., it keeps certain modules active and when active those modules consume power and over a period of time can cause the vehicle's battery to become drained." Before I saw your post I had been starting my Escape almost daily trying to stay ahead of the drainage problem but I was still experiencing the parasitic drain. After starting (usually with a jumpstart) and letting the car run, I would shut off the car and leave the key fob on my workbench (about 4-5 feet from the car). After I read your post I got into the habit of bringing the key fob into my house after every daily start, and wouldn't you know it, no more drain! I've even gone 4-5 days before starting the car and it still starts like a dream and no drainage! This problem had been happening for months and I'm very happy that I found your post. Thanks for a simple solution to a nagging issue.

I finally fixed our battery drain issue! The original battery was weak after 3 years. I found a thread on U-Tube about upgrading the battery to a group 48. It is an easy upgrade, you only need to reverse the hold-down clamp. The 2020 Escape Hybrid seems designed for this upgrade.

Since upgrading the battery, not only have the battery-drain issues stopped, but the center console reset issues have also disappeared. The screen frequently was not working and required a hard reset every few days.
