Spare key won't start vehicle? Primary key does.

I have a 2012 Ford Escape Limited with a small issue. In the past the spare key worked as normal, but since not using this key for the past few years I now have an issue where it won't start the SUV? It will unlock the doors and turn on the ignition as normal, but when turning the key to the start position it won't turn over and start the car? Primary key sworks fine. Any ideas what could cause this? Battery in the key is fine because it unlocks the doors and trigers the panic alarm like it should. Just simply won't start.

Sounds like something happened to the programming. The key has a chip in it that the vehicle has to be programmed to or it will not start. It is part of the anti-theft system. You will have to go to a locksmith or dealer to get it fixed.

Might try another batt, or test the current one installed..
Another option,, if you have a Windows based laptop and a tad bit savvy,, or for those in similar situations with lost keys and limited funds...
Would be a FORScan download (free), and a switchable HS/MS CAN ELM327 adapter,, available on eBay etc. The adapter is about 30.00 or so (must be ELM327 switchable) , and once the FORScan app is downloaded, you request a 'Extended License Agreement' from them. Its a timed/date sensitive access to be able to program extra PATS keys when only one remain, or non working. Or, you can delete 'all known keys' and start new if all are lost, stolen, or there's a security issue with the presents sets...
