Default 95 Escort Wagon

I bought a 95 escort wagon from my senior citizen neighbor to haul my kids around town. The car had been sitting in a garage for about 2 years. It has 61,000 miles on it. Here's my prob. There's an engine noise that no mechanic I've had look at it can figure out. It was misdiagnosed as a lifter by 2 mechanics. I had that checked, they said the lifters and everything else in that vicinity were fine. The last guy I had look at it said he thought it was the tensioner. sp? He replaced that and said everything else down there is fine but the noise is still there. The oil is clean, it has a new timing belt, and I'm getting really frustrated. The noise is on the left side when you're facing the car. It speeds up with acceleration. Sometimes it's quieter than others but it's always there and when it's loud, it's very loud. It kind of sounds like a lifter noise but not exactly? I'm running out of options. Anyone have any ideas?
