Default 99 escort runs rough after it warms up

Great little car (ZX2), lots of fun to drive & very economical compared even to most newer models. I get 42 mpg with this 2.0l on longer trips and 35mpg just running around. It has developed an idling problem after it is run a little bit. I have been told there is a solenoid that has to do with emissions or a small tube that might be clogged under the valve covers somewhere. I'm not a newbie, but don't do much motor work. I have rebuilt engines in years past, but not in 25 years or so. Is this solenoid a legit trouble spot in the 2.0l and is it a difficult part to get at and replace?
