Newly acquired 98 with issues with brakes/suspension and more! Any help appreciated.
I recently bought a 1998 escort lx with 98k miles that needs a lil work but I’m not sure exactly where to start or how to evaluate what to replace. It has some brake issues, suspension problems and A detached rear shock strut. I’ll post some pictures. My first question is. Should I replace both rear shock strut loaded springs? Just the passenger side is completely disconnected from the top mount bolts. Secondly, I’ve already replaced front sway bar links, haven’t seen the bushings yet. As you can tell by the pics, she has rusticwheel wells and floor boards which I plan on cleaning up to fiberglass but what else can you see in pics that may need my attention. I plan on driving it this summer while fixing it up for my sons bday in October. Thanks again for any info/direction. Front link already fixed Fr outer tie rod end. Replace? Rotors good for now? Driver side same amount of wear. Same tie rod end Strut mount..top Good strut mount Is there enough meat on the bone to just replace the strut mount or need to order some sort of solution?
Always replace shocks/ springs and struts in pairs. Before I would get too deep, I would look over everything underneath and tally up what the cost of repairs would be. It is obvious there is rust damage, anything structural and rusted out floor pans may mean the end of your 98. With all the items needing attention, it would be easy to have repair costs approach or exceed the value of your 98 Escort. You have to keep in mind, there is little if any factory safety equipment on your 98, there is rust damage and I would give serious consideration in having a family member drive such a vehicle.
Don't know if there is any state inspection program where you reside, but in states that do have safety inspection your vehicle could have a hard time passing due to rusted out suspension areas rendering it unsafe to drive.
Before considering investing a lot of $$$ in it , suggest having it checked thoroughly for hidden damage due to rust. Very likely the vehicle was driven, most of its life in the salt environment which can be very unkind to unprotected metal.
Thank you for the suggestions and a reality check, I’m so glad I asked before continuing on to ordering parts! I have since found a few areas rusting away!I will have it inspected for just general purpose’s but no way will I put my son in this car now! Thanks again for the knowledge!!

Thank you for the update. Right about now, pretty sure you will look a lot deeper before purchasing a used vehicle.
Some can look great outside and be a basket case underneath.
