'02 Excursion 7.3 Powerstroke
My Excursion with 191,000 miles just started making a whining sound when I accelerate hard without a load. The 1st time was after about 3 hours of highway driving and a 40 minute lunch break. When I got back on the interstate I heard the whine and backed off a little. I've been pretty easy on it the last week or two but today after about 30 minutes I heard it again only louder. Of course when my local diesel mechanic took it for a test drive the sound was gone.
What are the diagnostic tests for turbochargers?
What are the options for re-build?
FoMoCo OEM or aftermarket performance parts?

Well, the question is answered. A little noisy when I got to work this morning. When I left the parking lot 3 hours later the truck was belching blue/black smoke. Drove to the mechanic and it felt like I was pulling a medium sized 3rd world nation. No power at all, I had to allow extra time just to pull into traffic.
Turbo was stuck like chuck...no bueno no more. Installing a rebuilt turbo.
So, lesson learned...when the turbo whines, prepare to spend$$$
O yeah, and the guy in the truck belching smoke, no dirty looks...maybe he's on his way to the mechanic too.

I have to share this with you also. I was driving a vehicle with the same problem, only I was taking it in to the shop from a different location. I know what you mean when you get those looks !!!! They were so concentrated I was shouting , "This isn't my truck and I'm taking it in for repair !" Somehow I don't think they believed me.
