Default 2006 Expedition click and occasionally start

My 2006 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with 80000 miles just started to click once when i tried to start it. Sometimes it starts right away on the first try, sometimes on the 10th try. Seems to help if i run the gear shift from park to l..if that makes sense. Had the battery tested and they said needed to be replaced..so replaced it...but same issue...just ordered a new starter...could it be something else?

Thanks for your help

Need some addl info,
What engine is in your vehicle,
Does it click every time it won't start or does it turn over and try to start
or does it not turn over at all.
If you replaced the starter and the problem is gone , good .
Let us know if you might desire any suggestions if the problem is still present.

It is a 5.4 litre engine. Clicks once every time. But may turnover, sometimes a little slow on the 2nd, 3rd 4th or 5th try...seems to turnover quicker if I move the gear shift back and forth a across prndl...haven't put in new starter yet...could it be a short or bad relay? New battery and ignition key switch works fine

A starter draw test would tell you if the starter was the problem.

If the check checks out good , it would be a good move to check the battery cables and connections to the vehicle. Nine years can make a big difference with connections depending on where the vehicle stays.
Have you always used the recommended oil in the vehicle and had it changed as recommended? There were reasons for the recommendation and it was gamble if other than what was recommended was used. No need to go on until a few tests are done. Let us know what was found if the problem was corrected .
