Default 05 explorer dash lights

Skip down to the bottom if you do not want to read a small rant story that explains the issue..

I have an 05 Ford Explorer and the airbag light was on. I was told steering column and the air bag control module were bad. After they fixed those items I got in the car and a chime was going off, it would ring 5 sets of 5 chimes after the car was on for about a minute. I told the mechanic and the mechanic broke the chime so I could not hear it. Once I figured that out I was furious and had them fix it but do that they said they had to order me an instrument cluster.

NOW after having everything else properly programmed, the airbag light is off and the chime works. Now I get a message on the dash saying I have a tire pressure monitor fault (I have an XLS, I do not have tire pressure monitor) as well as the traction control light is blinking (the button on the console does not function now) and the brake light (!) comes on. These were not on before so I believe there is an issue with what they did but I can’t prove it yet.

Besides getting a lawyer and yelling at them to fix it again, what do you think is wrong with the car? I believe they put an instrument cluster for an XLT explorer and it’s not compatible with my car but I am not sure. Would replacing the cluster with a basic XLS one fix this problem?

This is will be the 6th time they had part of my dash off and every time they put it back together the Info/setup/reset buttons jam and I can’t get them to work. It’s very aggravating and they refuse to admit fault.

Long story short:

Currently the (!) light is on, a blinking traction control light, and the cluster reads there is a tire pressure monitor fault. They have replaced my steering column with a used one, and replaced the instrument cluster with a used one. These were not on before they touched my car trying to fix the airbag light. I don’t have tire pressure monitoring in my car.. it’s a base XLS. What do you think they messed up while fixing this?

Thanks

Thumbs up

Welcome to the site..

How many times has it been in to the shop to attempt to correct the original fault? Certainly things get missed or misdiagnosed, and allowing a shop to again correct an issue is needed. That said, if it’s been in more than a few times for unreasonable amounts of time, costs now exceed a repair, then the situation needs to be changed.

Obviously not the dealer. Doesn’t sound like a capable shop and has created issues with used parts. Possibly unneeded as well. Clusters aren’t model wide interchangeable units, and require vehicle/VIN specific programming. Taking it back may just prolong the difficulties and costs if any. After a 3rd attempt, I’d take it to your local Ford store, then persue the original shop for the costs to square it away.. A third party like Ford or ? that can correct you’re issues along with your observations and statements would be hard for the 1st shop to despute or deny a claim...
