Default 1996 Explorer 4x4 Speed Sensor

Own a 1996 Explorer Sport 4WD, over 200,000 miles, well maintained, Trans fluid changed every 50,000, oil every 5,000. Run only non ethanol gas, runs great, except the speed sensor is causing the speedometer to stop working then the transmission does not smoothly shift, clunks and bangs into next gear. Replaced speed sensor 3 times, no change. cleaned connectors from any dirt, grease, oil, dielectric grease, no change.
Anyone else have a fix?

Found a fix, folks! When changing the VSS, also change the pigtail plug, use dielectric sparingly, shrink wrap connections, keep it clean. Truck works, shifts smoother than before.
