Default Check Gas Cap

I tried to post this issue before and screwed it up, so I am trying again. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer with a V6 engine. The check fuel cap light is on. I cleaned around the gas and the cap and then I put a bit of grease on the seal, the light remains on. I then purchased a new gas cap and the light remains on. Any suggestion on possible remedy would be appreciated, Thank. John Hindson

The vehicle computer will eventually turn the lamp off ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if,,,,,,,,,,,,the problem has been corrected and the monitor has had an opportunity to run again.
It may require a few engine starts, and a certain period of time to run.
There is another way to do this and that is to remove the battery negative cable from the battery and go have a cup of coffee for 30 minutes. then reconnect the cable and the light should go out.
Doing this erases the adaptive memory in the computer. You might want to write down your radio stations because that memory will be erased as well as some of your driving habits that were in the memory. No problem there, just drive it normally and it will adapt them again.
