Need opinion on costly repair
Hi: Question about a costly repair on a 2005 Explorer V6. Symptom was loud noise coming from engine. Tech (Ford dealer) concludes noise coming from harmonic balancer, replaces it and crankshaft, noise still there. Removes transmission and exhaust, engine is quiet. Replaces transmission, still quiet, realizes problem is catalytic converter vibration, replaces it and problem gone.
My question is - is it reasonable to expect the dealer to see the difference in a noise coming from the front of the engine vs the rear, now there is a $1000 repair for balancer, crank, and transmission removal that got me nowhere, another $1000 for the catalytic converter which was the problem all along.
Am I out of line here to expect more from a ford tech?
Thanks for your input.

I hate to tell tales like this, but when it came to sending someone for update training the dealer couldn't spare the good tech to attend tng., so in order to get the authorization to do warranty work, guess who was sent? The car washer, who was asleep most of the time and couldn't care less. It isn't always the tech's fault. Many times their back is up against the wall and they make a hasty decision which can be wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if a mention of small claims court might open the door for negotiation.
Depending on the actual In-Service date and vehicle mileage, the converter may still have been under warranty, thus you may not be required to pay for it. I would at least check into the converter warranty...
