So I don't put my foot in my mouth, kidding, We , I believe are talking about a clutch pressure plate. Before doing the test the clutch had to have the correct amount of free ply, approx 1 to1and1/2 inches.
One of the checks we usually tried was to place the trans in second gear (If a 3 speed) and let the clutch out with some pressure on the gas pedal, if the engine stalled the clutch and pressure plate were doing their job. If,however, the engine was able to keep running , it meant the clutch was slipping and generating a lot of destructive heat. The majority of the time the clutch disc linings were worn beyond the point where any adjustment would help.If the clutch assy was removed you were able to see where the lining was worn down to the rivets. By that time if the flywheel was fairly smooth a new pilot bushing, clutch disc and pressure plate with release brg were installed and adjusted and you wee good to go.
Now,,, If the vehicle had a hydraulic clutch there is more to do and no sense getting any more windy , unless you let us know what you have.

Are you talking about replacing the clutch disc and reusing the old pressure plate? A test off vehicle?
