'96 fuel pump problems?
Hi all,I just picked up a '96 F150 5.8L. I believe the front tank fuel pump is bad, the engine will only start and run with the rear fuel tank selected. But a concern of mine is that the front tank started with half a tank of gas, but as the engine runs, the rear tank is somehow pumping gas into the front tank, which is now full. Is this something to be concerned with, or not. When taking the cap off of the front tank, there is enough pressure there that fuel sprays out. If anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it!Thanks,Ben
Probably a faulty check valve in the pump of the tank that is being filled. You will need to replace the pump to fix the problem. Also, when you go to buy the pump, ask if it has an internal check valve, is your replacing the pump only and not the entire assembly.
I talked to a guy at a parts store and he said there is a valve down by the fuel filter that should have 6 lines to it; 2 lines to the rear tank (supply and return), 2 to the front (supply and return), and 2 lines to the engine (supply and return). He suggested to replace the fuel pump and not worry about replacing the valve, is that a good idea or should I replace the valve, too? The valve is a dealer item for $140!
What the guy at the parts store is talking about is a selector valve that was discontinued on vehicles after about 92. The check valve in the fuel pump assembly does the work of that part. That is why the one you buy at the dealership costs more than the one you buy at Autozone. Different part............different price.
