EGR check engine
I just bought a 97 f-150 with a 4.6 liter V8. when i bought it the check engine light was on and so i had autozone check it out, they said that it was the EGR. Does anyone know what this is and how much it will cost to fix?

EGR is the Exhaust Gas Return. It's a valve thattakes un-burned fuel/air mixture out of your exhaust and puts it back into the engine to be used again. There is a tube that runs from your headers/exhaust manifold up to the EGR on the engine. Its should have a vacuum line on it, too. Not sure about the cost. Maybe $50-$100 for the part. If you're pressed for cash, you can run without it for a while.

My neighber is having the same problem and autozone said it mitght be the egr or thermostat. The code it gave was insufficient coolant temp / closed circuit or fuel control. Lookin at all the forums on here they suggest replacing the DPFE sensor. This is my neighbers car and dont want to replace something that doesnt need to be replaced I am replacing the thermostat cause it has not been replaced in three years the car is a 2003 ford ZX2 (escort) if anyone could help it would be appriciated

DPFE is an extremely common problem. Go back to AZ & ask them to hook scan tool up ,scroll to DPFE volts, should be around 1 volt during no flow. It has probably already had a couple EGR valves thrown at it so you're OK there. Easy way to check if ports in throttle body adapter are clogged is to remove EGR valve, start engine. Engine should rev out of control so be ready to shut it off. If it doesnt rev real high, remove throttle body,then adapter & get to picking out the ports.
