Default FAILSAFE MODE

Could someone expain this to me. While off roading in my 2005 F-150 I tore out my front drive shaft, which ripped out some wiring to the trans, I think it was tha shift / speed sensor. I was able to remove the shaft and drive it although the speedo did not work and the engine went into Failsafe Mode. Is this something new for 2005? A similiar thing happed to a friend on his 2002 F-150 and he was able to drive it without any problems
