I don't use my pickup much. I only use when I need to go to the dump or something big breaks at home and I have to get a new one. Like a refrigerator. I went to the dump in it last week and every time I stopped at a light after it warmed up the oil pressure gauge went into the red. If I gave it just a little throttle it went up to its normal spot. I checked the oil after getting home. It was were it was supposed to be. I replaced the oil sending unit. The oil pressure is a little higher when stopped at a light now, but not much. As it started to go into the red I gave it some throttle before it could. When I put it in park the pressure goes up to where it should be. Anyone know what's going on. I'm thinking of buying a digital oil pressure gauge from Amazon and installing it to see if reads different than the factory one. It has a 4.2 liter v6 and is a 2 wheel drive standard cab. Does anyone think my oil pump may be going out?

 

I started looking through the forums . This seems to be a common problem that no one has an answer for.

 

Usually,,,,,,before jumping to any conclusion , it is always a good move to verify the actual pressure with a regular oil pressure gauge in place of the sending unit.

Based on what we find there will determine what ,if anything, we do next.

 

How would I go about that.

 

Two ways to look at this,
If you want to invest in a kit that comes with a gauge , hose and fittings, you might consider purchasing one from a good auto supply place.

Another thing you could do is have a shop remove the oil pressure sending unit and connect their gauge to check the pressure.

You could ask what the cost is for either choice and decide from there.

 

I could just pull the sending unit and connect a gauge myself?
