Default I stumped 2 ford service guys...

Ok lucky me again...

This time we have a stater problem.

lets start with the key

the key is connected to the gear
the gear is connected to one half of the actuator
one half of the actuator is connected to the other half of the actuator
and the second actuator is connected to the pin in the starter switch which is connected to the steering column.

the actuator slides in a closed channel through the cast assembly that makes the steering column
turn the key it pushes the pin and starts my truck
unfortunately if you turn the key back one half of the pin comes back but the part connected to the switch does not move

so my actuator halves are no longer connected

I pulled the steering wheel
and got my fingers on both ends of the actuators but could not get them out
and it appears the pivot of the tilt wheel must be disassembled in order to get at the pieces

my question
has anyone ever heard of this repair
does the pivot need to be broken (two very tight torque head bolts)
can a front stoop mechanic pull it off

Yep. The tilt needs to come out. There is a tool that removes the pins that are holding the tilt column in place. There are threads inside the center of the little torx headed bolts. You might go to Autozone and they should be able to print out instructions. The little tool is not that expensive, but if you only use it once, it is a costly tool. Here is a link to a tool.

I have had to replace the pivot before on a truck i used to have. its kind of a pain, but doesnt take that long. Before i replaced it i took the bottom cover off the collum, and bent the pin/shaft down. That way i could still start the truck by hand. Good luck.
