5.4 starts then dies when I let go of the gas? stumped
Hello all I have a 1998 expedtion 5.4 , and I am having intermetting issues
with the truck staying on.
When I start the car It will only stay on if I keep the gas pedal
pressed down and sounds normal, no spitting or coughing.
This happened once last week, and 4 times this week.
The wierd part is sometimes its normal and sometimes
it gives me this problem and Luckily it happens at my house so I dont
get stranded.
Any help? I read some vacuum hoses may cause this if so
and certain ones or locations would be great, Thanks
Also read in the forum for an explorer it was idle air control valve.
thoughts? before i spend 75 on the part. Thanks
with the truck staying on.

I was having the same problem - when was the last timeyouchanged the fuel filter? If you've done it recently, then your most likely problem is the fuel pump - if all of your vacuum hoses check out OK. To remove the fuel pump you'll have to remove the fuel tank. Good luck.

I have a 1999 eddie bauer 5.4 and the same problem a couple of years ago. On a cold start, First of the day or first after sitting a while, like a shift at work, it would start right up but immed die unless i held my foot on the acc for a couple of min. Then it would run fine. for me it was the idle control valve. Located on the top and back side of the engine. Somewhat difficult but not too bad. They get clogged with exhaust soot or the spring inside actually breaks. If I can recall correctly the part is around $125.00.
