Default odd tranny quirk

I have a 1998 F 150. The tranny started doing something odd. It was taking a long time to shift into 1st. Once it went into 1st it would shift smoothly all day. I thought at first it was just too cold. We were having negative temps at night.
Checked the fluid, all was good.
It took longer and longer to get into 1st until, It would not. But if I revved it up REAL high it would.
Is that an indication of what is wrong or is the tranny just shot?

When was the last time you had the trans fluid and filter changed?

not sure about the filter but I do know last year I had a bad leak. Did not change fluid but did add a whole lot.

If, for example, the filter is restricted , the pump has to work harder to produce the pressure required to apply the clutches and other parts that require adequate fluid pressure and volume to function as designed. Suggest you give it some serious thought.

trucks got about 150,000 miles and no lag in reverse. Lag in only forward gears, drive 1st and 2nd.

Time for a rebuild. The Forward Clutch is gone; a common problem for the 4R70W.
