Default tranny oil thru radiator???????????

why is the tranny oil routed thru radiator? to help cool or preheat?
there is a small oil cooler with room for larger one.

Enemy #1 to any automatic trans is heat !
To help get some of that heat under control , the trans fluid is circulated thru the radiator to lower the temp and hopefully prevent damage to parts that are affected by hi heat. Some companies manufacture trans pans with air cooling tubes in them to help get the temp even lower. When a trans "slips" it is generating loads of heat that actually causes the fluid to develop a burned smell. That particular subject is why when purchasing a used vehicle a check of the trans fluid for that burned smell is a telltale clue the trans has problems.
