Default Trans issues

I have a 1993 f150 xlt (single cab/longbed)with a 302ci engine and a E4od trans. Stock truck as far as I know. Had for a little over a year now, never really had any problems out of it. Truck has a little over 200k miles on it. Question/problem, start the truck up(hot or cold) put into reverse truck backs up bo problem. Shift into Drive and truck feels like the brakes are stuck when you step on the gas. Give it more gas and the truck will move a little but transmission is slipping .Shift the truck down into 1 or 2 and the truck will take off like normal. Now pull out onto the road in 1st or 2nd truck takes off fine get up to 45mph or so and manually Shift into Druve and it shifts into drive no problem, doesn't miss a beat come to a red-light. Light turns green, step on gas (in Drive) same thing, I have to Shift into 2 or 1 either one and truck takes off just fine. Has anybody ever experienced this?

If the trans is slipping, the fluid should smell burned, does it? If so ,fluid and filter are in poor condition, just maybe a fluid and filter change might help.
Let us know if there is any difference. Problems in plain view should be handled first.

I would consult a good transmission shop for a diagnosis. If your transmission has never been serviced in those 200k miles and is now slipping, the prognosis is not good. A loaded filter will starve the whole transmission of lubrication. An overhaul could be in your future. In addition, the shift solenoids will attract metallic debris which is suspended in the fluid. The longer you drive with a slipping transmission, the more material is worn off the forward clutch.

Yes I changed the filter and fluid this past weekend. No change. The fluid looked like motor oil. There was also quite a bit of metal in the pan, filter was horrible. I have no idea on the history of the truck, so when or if it has ever been changed. Thank you for the reply and let me know if you think of anything else

Thank you for you advice, I am afraid that the direction i am headed in. I have another transmission out of a 1993 f150 shortbed but it was a 4x4. What is involved to swap the tail shaft and housing? Will it work? Or could i get a longer driveshaft?

You should be able to transfer parts from one E4OD to another but be cautious and examine everything from the failed transmission. You do not want to introduce debris from your failed tranny to your good one. You should also flush the cooling lines and the transmission cooler or your efforts changing transmissions will be wasted..
