Default Vct, timing, and oil pressure issues.

Hi, looking for some advice on an older truck.

2007 F150 Lariat 4x4 Crew cab. For a year or so ive had vct timing problems. At warm idle timing started messing up as happens with this issue. I understand what is happening with the lower oil pressure when warm, although im not familiar with exactly how that works with timing and the vct solenoids. But, I dove in and changed the solenoids, keep the oil fresh as I can. No improvement.

From what I understand now, a whole timing and cam phaser rebuild is whats needed along with a higher output oil pump. Thing is with this old truck that has other minor problems and is starting to rust, I dont want to stick that much money into it.

Does anyone know of any other work arounds I could do to improve the problem? Im getting quite tired of driving with both feet, revving the engine in neutral at every red light. I just need the truck to last another year or so.

Thank you so much for any advice!

You primary issue is with oil pressure.
do not throw parts at the old girl until you confirm the oil pressure, get a gauge on it and take a reading.
If the pressure is low, change the oil viscosity to a higher number until the pressure is stable..

I looked on youtube and Fordmakuloco showed a way to check the 5.4 which involved hooking up the gauge to the oil pressure sensor port. That looked like a hard place for me to get to with no garage or lift. Do you know of an easier way to check it?
